English
At The English School, English/Literacy teaching is completely in line with current requirements of the National Curriculum. English is taught by class teachers in Reception to Year 5, and by a specialist teacher in Years 6 to 8. The appropriate S.A.T.'s are administered at the end of Key Stages.
This important subject area is well resourced and in addition to reading schemes and textbooks, the School possesses an excellent library of fiction, non-fiction and reference books. Within Year 2 to Year 7 there is an emphasis upon Literacy. We run an adapted Literacy hour, and shared text work, word and sentence study and individual literacy assignments are used to deliver the National Curriculum in English.
Many English lessons in Years 3 - 8 involve drama, role-play exercises and the preparation and rehearsal of small plays for assembly or other occasions.
In addition there are opportunities within KS1 and KS2 for pupils to audition and participate in school shows and plays during the academic year.
As well as the teaching of spelling, handwriting, grammar, syntax and comprehension work, the English groups within Year 6 - 8 concentrate on an appreciation of literature, poetry and drama. KS3 English language and literature is an important preparation for GCSE work.
