Year 8 enjoyed their recent trip to the Diabetes Research Institute where they learnt about Diabetes Mellitus, a chronic metabolic disease, where the pancreas is not producing insulin, not enough insulin or cells don’t respond to insulin and so blood sugar levels become too high. We started off our tour with a presentation to learn about the symptoms of the disease, which are increased urination, thirst, hunger and tiredness and methods of prevention, including stop smoking and maintaining healthy body weight. It is astonishing to think that Kuwait is on the top ten list of countries with highest prevalence of type 2 diabetes, an estimated 25% of the population or 1 in 4 people! One of Dasman Diabetes Institute’s goals is to educate children about lifestyle choices that can prevent onset of type 2 diabetes. Children participated in a variety of fun, educational sessions to increase awareness of how to prevent type 2 Diabetes by eating healthily and exercising regularly. They prepared healthy snacks and enjoyed tasting their creations, participated in a fitness class and Everton football club training session and flew kites in the grounds.
