Desert Survival Skills in Year 7
Presentation

So far this term, Year 7 pupils have been busy learning about travel writing in their English lessons and have rather enjoyed studying and writing about the pursuits of extreme explorer, Bear Grylls. Unfortunately Mr Grylls was unable to visit us here in Kuwait, but fortunately for the pupils, pilot and desert survival skills leader, Mr Harris was available to talk to our pupils about desert survival.

All pupils in Year 7 enjoyed Mr Harris’ lively and fascinating talk which taught them life- saving tips including how to find shade in the desert and how to avoid dehydrating during intense heat, (for some reason, the children particularly enjoyed this part of the presentation- you’ll have to ask your child why!). Pupils also appreciated seeing and handling advanced satellite communication devices and equipment Mr Harris had bought with him.

Year 7 will now return to their travel writing task armed with interesting facts to integrate into their first drafts. Rayce summed up the presentation by saying ‘That was inspiring; I really want my own pair of night vision goggles now!’ While Jack said, ‘I love writing when it is about things like this, it helps when the subject is exciting. I thought writing about the desert would be boring at first but now I can’t wait to write more about it.’ English teachers Mrs. Gee, Mrs. O’Meeghan and Ms. Donald were pleased to see so many pupils enthused after Mr Harris’ talk and look forward to reading their writing back in the classroom tomorrow.
