After a very busy couple of weeks of sport for the TES teams this week was a little quieter on the fixture front. The U13 volleyball and basketball teams used the free time to practise hard for the upcoming semi finals next week. The week finished with a KFSAC Y5/6 cricket competition in which the boys were looking to defend their title from last year.
Y5/6 KFSAC Cricket Tournament
Superb boys retain the KFSAC Cricket trophy
Saturday 2nd April. Sunny. Hot. A day made for cricket. The annual KFSAC cricket tournament. Could you have asked for a better day to listen to the sound of leather upon willow? Unfortunately the sound of the construction work nearby drowned out any hope of that but still the children in Year 5 and 6 were ready.
The team had been chosen after recent trials and practise had taken place during break times at school. The gladiators now stood waiting for the battle to commence. No swords or shields or cannons, but cricket balls and bats. Could their rigorous preparation hold them in good stead and see them cross the finish line unscathed?
BSK were the first opponents and TES took to the field, focused and ready. The surface was not overly friendly to the bowlers and the boys had to work hard to generate bounce when they bowled, but this challenge was met easily and 6 overs of quality bowling followed. TES conceded only 13 runs from these overs (BSK finishing on 173) and bowled brilliantly to take 8 wickets.
When the time came to bat Jack and Lewis got off to a steady start. Benjamin and Omar found it difficult to score freely as the BSK bowling was poor at times, but they kept their wickets intact and pushed the score on nicely. Basil and Finnley were the final pair batting and they motored the TES score up to 238, with only 1 wicket lost.
A resounding victory to start the defence of our title.
A friendly against the KES ‘B’ team was the next match and our gladiators strode out onto the pitch, again with an air of calm and confidence.
Another fantastic bowling performance reduced KES ‘B’ to a score of 187 – 17 runs scored and 6 wickets taken in the allotted 6 overs. Once more into battle strode our batsmen and, following a succession of boundaries and elegant shot-making, victory was secured. A final score of 261, again with only 1 wicket lost, was evidence of the boys’ domination.
With confidence now high, we marched on to our next battle - against NES. TES lost the coin toss this time and were put in to bat – potentially a difficult situation. However, strong shot-making again and solid running between the wickets ensured the boys came off after the 6 overs with a strong score of 243. Defending this total was not going to be a problem, based on the previous matches, but TES had a point to prove and went about their business brilliantly.
Fantastic bowling limited NES to only 16 runs in their 6 overs. More impressive was the overall fielding – 12 wickets were shared among the
bowlers! The catching was of the highest standard and the wicket-keeping was incredibly sharp. This brilliant, dominant performance gave TES a huge 87 run victory.
Our last game against KES was expected to be a tough one. Historically, the battles against KES had always decided the winner of the tournament and TES again expected a strong challenge.
We once again lost the coin toss but KES decided to bat first and our gallant warriors took their positions on the battlefield.
Our skill with the ball and bravery in the field proved too strong for a gutsy KES team and only 18 runs came from the 6 overs. Another 6 wickets had fallen and this reduced the KES score to a disappointing 188 (technically minus 12). Our players could now sense victory and the trophy was again in our sight. KES were not taking it home!
Jack and Lewis, again opening, pushed the score along nicely and TES sat comfortably at 219 after the first 2 overs. Omar and Benjamin controlled the middle overs against same poor bowling and nudged the score along to 229 – Benjamin becoming the first player to score a six with his last blow of the bat! Basil and Finnley took their stances against the remaining 2 KES bowlers and effortlessly brought the score up to 252. A great batting performance from all 6 players.
This score gave TES another resounding win – victory by 64 runs.
The gladiators, still looking sprightly, came off the battlefield unmatched in all areas - brilliant in the field, accurate and devastating with the
ball and balanced and elegant with the bat. This was a complete all-round performance from 6 very strong cricketers. From 4 games the boys conceded only 64 runs and managed to take a staggering 32 wickets. Twenty20 here we come!
Throughout the tournament the boys played with a fantastic spirit and were incredibly sporting. They really were a credit to their parents and to TES. Another trophy for the Year 5 and 6 boys as they continue their highly successful year. Very well played boys!
